Heidi Segal (she/her) began her term as Chair of the Commission on Social Action in January 2024. She has been a member of the Commission since 2018 and served as a Vice Chair for four years before being elected Chair at the end of 2023.
Ms. Segal is a member of the North American Board of the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) and a member of its Executive Board and its Planning and Budget Committee. In 2021, she chaired the Governance Task Force charged with amending the URJ's Constitution and Bylaws.
Ms. Segal graduated from Vassar College and New York University School of Law. She was a public defender and capital defender at the Legal Aid Society in New York City, and then worked at the Vera Institute of Justice in New York City where she launched and directed their Youth Justice Programs. Ms. Segal currently resides in Los Angeles, California where she is a member and past President of Temple Israel of Hollywood.
Ms. Segal sits on numerous committees and Boards including the leadership team of RAC-California, as a lead convener of the Los Angeles Black and Jewish Justice Alliance, and has consulted on strategic planning and risk containment for local non-profit organizations. In 2020 Ms. Segal was appointed as a Civil Service Commissioner for Los Angeles County. She is married to Eric Krautheimer, a lawyer, and they have raised two children, Elise and Evan.
