Reform Movement Position
In 2001, the Union of Reform Judaism and the Central Conferences of American Rabbis passed Resolutions on Election Reform. In these resolutions, the URJ and CCAR called for vigorous protection of the right to vote for all, the passage of legislation that would ensure fairness with respect to the casting and counting of votes, federal financial assistance for states and localities to modernize their voting equipment and an investigation by the Justice Department into allegations of voter disenfranchisement. The Resolutions also called on congregations to organize nonpartisan voter registration drives. On behalf of the URJ and the CCAR, the Religious Action Center advocates for national legislation that protects and expands access to the ballot, particularly for groups that have been historically disenfranchised.
