Washington, D.C. August 4, 2014 - Upon the news of the passing of former White House Press Secretary James Brady, Rachel Laser, Deputy Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:
We mourn the loss of James Brady, who served his country as White House Press Secretary and later became a tireless advocate for gun violence prevention. Brady's own highly-visible experience with the horrors of gun violence made clear the need for smarter gun laws.
The Talmud tells us that "whoever saves a life, it is as though he has saved an entire world." Along with his wife Sarah, chair of the Brady Campaign and the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, Jim Brady fought for passage of the landmark gun violence law that bears his name and has since helped prevent over 2 million gun sales to dangerous individuals, likely saving countless lives in the process. As we remember the life and achievements of James Brady, we will also honor his memory by continuing to fight for safer gun laws in America.
