During the High Holidays this year, Judea Reform created a new and successful program to educate congregants about diverse disaster relief initiatives and to raise funds to support people in need throughout the world. We called this effort our Tzedekah Mutual Fund. We asked congregants to contribute one gift to this fund; we would then distribute the pooled gifts to six relief organizations working around the world. By offering this avenue of philanthropy to our congregants, we helped them solve the dilemma of wanting to support many causes, but only being able to give to one.
Our Tzedekah Mutual Fund focused on the following emergencies:
- Hurricanes Katerina and Rita;
- Mudslides in Central America;
- Famine in Niger;
- Violence in Darfur, Sudan;
- October Earthquake in Pakistan, and;
- 2004 Tsunami in South Asia.
We selected the URJ Disaster Relief Fund for Hurricane Katerina as a recipient of Tzedekah Mutual Fund gifts.
