Target Groups: Multi-generational Social Action Program, Adults, Elementary School, Middle School, High School

This 650-family congregation revamped its Social Action Committee to build a broad base of leadership that could ensure that social action would be a part of every aspect of congregational life. Members fill out a pledge card indicating the type of projects they are interested in doing and how often they are available to do them. The projects include coordinating mitzvah projects for every grade in the religious school; monthly lunch preparation at a women's shelter; yearly toy drives; annual special services for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Children's Sabbath; monthly participation in Habitat for Humanity projects; and ongoing educational programs to raise awareness of current legislative issues. Approximately one-third of the congregation has participated in this program over the last two years, and many members have become involved in more than one project. The committee receives constant feedback and has been quick to incorporate suggestions by adjusting the program and seeking ways to involve more people each year.
