Serving the Blind and Visually Handicapped

Reform Jews can help serve the blind and the visually handicapped by volunteering to tape a book or other articles.

Target Groups: Adults, Multi-generational Social Action Program

The U.S. Library of Congress together with the Council for the Jewish Elderly, the Jewish Braille Society, and the Midwest Federation of Temple Sisterhoods sponsors a program that coordinates volunteers to help the visually impaired and handicapped enjoy "talking books." The program provides the necessary equipment and audio cassettes of books, magazines, lectures, and newspapers, as well as free instruction on using the equipment. To be eligible for the service, individuals must be U. S. citizens and certified by a competent authority. Materials are available in Hebrew, Yiddish, Russian, and English.
