WASHINGTON, D.C., October 5, 2010 -- In response to Monday's pre-dawn graffiti, arson and Quran burning at a West Bank mosque, Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:

We unequivocally condemn Monday's acts of vandalism against a West Bank mosque. The graffiti, arson, and desecration of holy books and objects attacked the principles of respect and tolerance that are at the core of healthy interreligious relations. It is as well our fervent hope that despite the destruction and hurt caused by this attack, its perpetrators will not succeed in destroying the fledgling peace process.

Less than a month ago, the entire worldwide Jewish community spoke against an American pastor's plans to burn the Quran. Today, we are stricken by this attack, made even more problematic by reports that indicate it may have been the work of Jewish settlers. Acts of religious hatred have no place in civilized society. We stand with our Muslim brothers and sisters who embrace the value of religious tolerance, mutual respect, and freedom in Israel, the United States and around the world.

Let us ensure that this week's violence serves as a reminder for Israelis and Palestinians of the urgent need for lasting peace and the recognition that lasting peace requires lasting respect for each other.
