Press Release from the Religious Action Center

WASHINGTON – In response to Islamic centers in California and Georgia receiving threatening hate mail, Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, released the following statement:

We condemn in the strongest possible terms the vile, hate-filled letters sent to mosques in California and Georgia. Freedom to worship is a fundamental American principle. Indeed, it is the first right guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. Religious pluralism is a strength and a source of national pride and Muslims are as much a part of the American community as Jews, Christians and any other person of faith or no faith.

Jews and Muslims are all the family of Abraham, and we stand side-by-side to reject Islamophobia. We have a responsibility to vocally and forcefully oppose bigotry, whether it be anti-Semitism, anti-Muslim bigotry or any other form of prejudice. Our country is stronger because of the religious diversity and freedom that has always been our hallmark. American Muslims are an indispensable part of this nation.

The Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism is the Washington office of the Union for Reform Judaism, whose nearly 900 congregations across North America encompass 1.5 million Reform Jews, and the Central Conference of American Rabbis, whose membership includes more than 2,000 Reform rabbis. Visit for more.
