Reform Jewish Leader Denounces Assault on a Peaceful Transition of Power

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 5, 2021

WASHINGTON - Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner, director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, released the following statement on behalf of the Union for Reform Judaism, Central Conference of American Rabbis, and wider Reform Movement:

We read in the Talmud that a ruler is not to be appointed until the community is consulted. Though those words were written centuries ago, they inspire our modern commitment to a robust representative democracy.

The effort by some members of Congress to functionally overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election are nothing less than an assault on the peaceful transition of power and American democracy.

During this election season, more Americans voted than in any election in more than 100 years. State election officials have certified the results. Courts at every level, from the states to the U.S. Supreme Court, have affirmed the integrity of the elections process.

Those members of Congress who are delaying the certification of Joe Biden as the nation’s 46th President are shamefully rejecting their sworn duty to protect our democracy. We call on all members of the 117th Congress to fulfill their constitutional duties and certify the results of the presidential election. Kol kolot: Every Voice, Every Vote.  Let the voices and will of America’s voters be heard.
