Target Groups: Multi-generational Social Action Program, Adults
This congregation proves that a synagogue does not need to be large in size to make a major difference in the community. With only 150 families, Temple Emek Shalom has two food drives each year, for Pesach and Yom Kippur, collecting two tons of food, making the congregation the largest single contributor to the local food bank. Members participate in disaster relief efforts, raising significant funds for Congregation B'nai Israel in Grand Forks, ND, and for victims of Hurricane Mitch. Congregants deliver Meals on Wheels for two weeks each year and serve as Food Bank volunteers two weeks a year. The congregation also serves as a shelter for one week each winter, in a revolving church/synagogue program. Over 80% of the members participated at the congregation's first Intergenerational Mitzvah Day. All of this is accomplished on a $250 budget-just going to prove that bigger is not always better!
