Host Project: Caring for AIDS patients and their families

Congregants provide support services for HIV/AIDS patients and their families.

Goals: 

  • Provide a support system for Jewish families of AIDS patients in treatment.
  • Engage congregants with specialized skills in acts of outreach to those in need of support.

Overview:
The Host Project provides relief and support services to families who have come to the city to care for loved ones with AIDS.

Preparation:
The social action committee developed a relationship with a local HIV/AIDS treatment center, asking them to refer Jewish patients and their families to the synagogue. These individuals were provided complimentary professional support services.

Project Implementation:
The project is staffed by a group of volunteers from various professional backgrounds. Working together with the patients and their families, needs and determined on a case-by-case basis. Services include logistical assistance (directions, transportation, etc.), access to and assistance in finding local affordable housing, delivery of food, donated home goods, patient and family social services, and help arranging for Jewish holiday observance while away from home.

Results:
Patients and their families find comfort in the support of a welcoming Jewish community.
