  • Engage congregants in local poverty issues through a variety of ways – building on their individual strengths and interests.
  • Build a partnership with a local low-income school.

Working with a local “adopt-a-school” program, an area synagogue adopted a neighboring public elementary school. Through this relationship, congregants were able to volunteer in a variety of ways.

Congregants were able to participate in the ‘adopt-a-school’ partnership in a variety of ways:

  • School supply and classroom goods donation drive
  • Tutoring program
  • Athletics coaching assistance
  • Sponsorship of science fairs and other school events

Not only did this opportunity allow the congregation take an active role in local educational programming and allow the students to strive toward academic excellence, but it afforded the congregation to partner with local business for sponsorship opportunities. This interaction serves as the highest mitzvot – teaching others to help themselves. It brought great community spirit and served as an entrée for many congregants into long-term social action work.
