In 1994, Rabbi Robert Klensin urged the congregants of his Arnold, MD reform Jewish synagogue, Temple Beth Shalom, to take a stand on gun violence prevention. Now, 30 years later, his grandson, 17-year-old Elijah Paul, carried the torch l'dor vador.
"Have we forgotten the call of the shofar already / To gather and stand up for what’s right? / Have we forgotten what shofar’s demanding / That we pursue justice, compassion, holy light?"
So I am going home with moral clarity for these turbulent times. I am feeling refreshed spiritually, reinvigorated strategically, renewed in my commitment, and prepared to help bend that arc a little more toward justice. I have no doubt that the journey ahead will be difficult. But the passion and perspective I picked up will push us - my rabbinic partner and I - through my diminishing patience for the status quo to produce what I perceive will become new organizing opportunities.
