Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation sought to underscore its commitment to social action by creating a Tikkun Olam calendar, designed to encompass all of the congregation's social justice projects. Prior to the creation of the calendar, social action projects at IHC seemed disconnected. The Tikkun Olam calendar offers congregants numerous opportunities to access information regarding all IHC's social action programming has to offer the congregation, as well as the greater Indianapolis community.

The goal of the calendar is to make social action "one stop shopping" for the congregation's members. Congregants are able to review the calendar, and choose activities in their area of interest which fit into their family schedules.

The Tikkun Olam calendar offers many diverse opportunities to "repair the world." Some of the programs included in the Tikkun Olam calendar include:

  •

  • Gleaner's High Holy Day Food Drive. Each year the congregation collects several thousand pounds of food for Indianapolis's largest food bank. This project occurs both on Rosh Hashanah and in early winter.

  • Mitzvah Day. The third annual Temple-wide Social Action project. Over 500 volunteers gathered together for a special blessing and well wishes as they embark on an Indianapolis community-wide effort to assist social welfare agencies.

  • Shabbat with the Seniors at Hooverwood. Members celebrated the true spirit of Shabbat by sharing an evening with those in a senior housing community.

  • Crooked Creek/Concord Center Drive. A semi-annual toys, clothing and toiletries drive for two Indianapolis Community Centers; members also participate in the distribution of these items to needy youths in the community.

  • Ronald McDonald House Breakfast. Young People's Chevra (YPC) and others aged 18- 40 spend a morning cooking for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House.

  • Hooverwood Replacement Workers. The Temple Brotherhood recruits volunteer replacement workers on Christmas Day.

  • Hope Lodge Dinner. ‘Warm up the Winter' Dinner for residents of the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge. Sponsored by Sisterhood.

  • Chametz Drive. Unopened boxes of cereal, cookies, pasta and bread are collected and donated to help Crooked Creek Community Center's Party.

  • Take Back the Night Rally. Concerned women and men raise awareness of domestic violence/sexual assault by marching together to prevent violence against women.

The list goes on. It is extensive and impressive, balancing hands-on projects and advocacy.
