Social Action Worship Resources

worship around the nation

Many congregations hold services with social action themes throughout the year, either in relation to holidays, such as Sukkot or Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, or to highlight particular issues like hunger or the environment. This website is meant to give social action committees or service leaders resources for planning their services. What follows is a collection of prayers and readings organized in two ways.

In the first section there are readings tied to specific sections of the liturgy. There are several points in our service that are especially conducive to highlighting social action or social justice themes. This section suggests moments in the service that are natural places for special readings and examples of readings that are thematically linked to the prayer. The Shabbat services, evening and morning, are our guides. These supplemental readings are meant to enhance the liturgy and highlight the call for tikkun olam that resides within our prayers.

The second section includes readings on specific social action issues and is organized by theme. This website is a work in progress; as we find new prayers and readings, we will add them to the site, so please check back for the latest additions.
