Currently 45 states and the District of Columbia have some type of hate crime law. Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Wyoming have no state hate crime laws. State hate crime laws vary greatly, and in many cases do not include some of the groups that are often the targets of bias-motivated violence. For example, only 32 states include sexual orientation as part of hate crime law, and only 28 states include gender bias motivated crimes as part of hate crime law. For more information about state hate crimes law, see the Anti-Defamation League’s interactive map: http://www.adl.org/learn/hate_crimes_laws/map_frameset.html.
