Nation's Largest Jewish Movement Signs On to Jubilee 2000/USA

Contact: Jeff Mandell, (202) 387-2800

WASHINGTON, December 23, 1999 — The Union of American Hebrew Congregations officially joined the Jubilee 2000/USA Campaign today. Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, announced the UAHC's affiliation in the following letter:

On behalf of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, and its more than 875 congregations whose membership includes 1.5 million Reform Jews, I am delighted to formally join the Jubilee 2000/USA Campaign.

The Reform Movement has long recognized the importance of cooperative and integrated economic relations among nations to improve conditions in foreign countries undergoing crisis. We live in a time when one quarter of the world's population lives in poverty, 1.2 billion people have no reliable access to safe drinking water, and 40 million individuals die of hunger every year.

The Jubilee 2000/USA Campaign's leadership has been instrumental in focusing the nation's attention on the vital need to cancel the suffocating foreign debt of the world's most impoverished countries.

Judaism teaches that moral people and moral nations have an affirmative obligation to assist those less fortunate. Our Rabbis teach: "One person was created to teach us the importance of the actions of every individual, for we should treat the whole world as half good and half bad, so that if we do one good deed, it will tip the whole world to the side of goodness" (Based on Mishna Sanhedrin 4:5).

We look forward to working with you on this vital campaign.
Rabbi David Saperstein
