WASHINGTON, September 21, 2000 - Reacting to today's Iranian court decision that only reduced the sentences of the 10 Iranian Jews, Mark J. Pelavin, Associate Director of the Religious Action Center, issued the following statement:
As we approach the Jewish New Year, we join together with Jews around the world in prayer and support of the 10 Jews who will not be able to celebrate Rosh Hashanah with their families because they remain imprisoned in Iran. We are profoundly disappointed in today's ruling that failed to grant an impartial trial. We call upon the Iranian authorities to abide by internationally recognized protocols of justice and due process. We join in the families' outrage, and we pledge that we will not be silent until justice is done.
The Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism is the Washington office of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (UAHC), whose 900 congregations across North America encompass 1.5 million Reform Jews, and the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) whose membership includes over 1700 Reform rabbis.
