New York, NY, August 19, 2003 - In response to today's suicide bombing in Jerusalem, Robert M. Heller, Chair of the Commission on Social Action of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:

Today's suicide bombing, claiming the lives of 20 innocent victims thus far and injuring more than 100 individuals, was a deplorable act of terror. Our hearts and prayers are with the victims, their families and loved ones.

The tragedy of the bombing is made all the more bitter in light of recent advancements on the path to peace. Acts of violence will never result in a lasting peace in the Middle East and until brutal terrorist acts such as today's cease, the right of all Israelis to live in safety continues to be threatened. We welcome the United States' forceful and prompt condemnation of this heinous act and at the same time, urge the Administration not to abandon its efforts to bring peace to a region that has known so much bloodshed.

As we prepare to soon welcome a new year, it requires strength to pray for peace in the face of such barbarism. We call on the Palestinian leadership to hold accountable those responsible for today's violence and condemn without reservation the acts of those who seek to prevent the establishment of peace.
