Inspired by a Bat Mitzvah student's mitzvah project in August, 1999, Temple Chai's Literacy Project now works with two elementary schools in the greater Phoneix area. The program includes the one-on-one tutoring programs that many congregations are now engaged in doing. Temple Chai's program is of special note in its comprehensive approach. In addition to the tutoring/mentoring programs, they ran a book drive, collecting more than 1000 books, ran a backpack drive to distribute, full of supplies, book bags to needy students, and recently added a sneaker drive. In addition, teens from the congregation volunteer after school at extended care and help the students with their homework. This holistic approach to school/synagogue partnerships has both enriched the student recipients and helped reach more members of the congregation.
