This 350-family congregation in Suburban New Jersey has built a strong social action program, seeking to maximize the opportunities for members to be involved, while working to alleviate the problems of a wide range of needs for the disadvantaged. Most of the programs initiated by the congregation require only a short time commitment, which has, in part, led to the congregation's success in attracting a large percentage of its members. Programs include, among others: providing housing and meals for homeless families at the synagogue for one week every summer; conducting a "Mitzvah Mall" at Chanukah, with students picking the organizations which would receive the donations; an on-going relationship with a local soup kitchen; "Paint the Town," an interfaith project in which the synagogue takes responsibility for repairing a house of a needy person in the area; and collecting supplies for needy children in a "Mitzvah Crib."
