Working together with the Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center, Temple Beth Sholom has reached out to victims of child abuse and poverty by working with the clients of a single social worker to provide those children with decent clothes, toiletries, toys, and books. The social worker makes the congregation aware of the needs of the clients and Temple members supply the items. Excess items are given to other social workers for their clients. In addition to helping these children, this program has helped change the way people view the synagogue. Members now routinely call when they have "gently-used" items to see where they might be able to give them to have the most impact. Other donations have increased as well. This project has succeeded in helping to create a "culture of giving" at Temple Beth Shalom.
