The "December Dilemmas"
Information about the complex issues that arise in public schools during the Christmas and Hanukkah holiday season.

The role of religion in public schools and its acceptable limits come to the front of public consciousness in December during the holiday season. This issue is rarely black and white and often whether or not a particular action or event is constitutional depends entirely upon the context surrounding the situation. If something is occurring in your public school that makes you or your child uncomfortable share your concerns with a teacher or a school principle and see if it can be resolved. Your rabbi and other community leaders can also be great resources and sources of support in these conversations. For more information, see "Religious Holidays in the Public Schools: Questions and Answers," a guide compiled by a number of religious liberty and education associations.
