WASHINGTON, D.C., May 21, 2009 – In response to reports that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has uncovered an elaborate plot by terrorists to bomb Riverdale Temple in Bronx, New York, and the nearby Riverdale Jewish Center, Rabbi Eric Yoffie, President of the Union for Reform Judaism, and Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, sent a letter of thanks and commendation to FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III, New York City Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, and New York State Police Superintendent Harry J. Corbitt. The text of their letter to Director Mueller follows:
Dear Director Mueller,
On behalf of the Union for Reform Judaism, whose 900 congregations (including Riverdale Temple in the Bronx) encompass nearly 1.5 million Reform Jews, we write to express our gratitude to the FBI for its dedicated and impressive work in thwarting the plans of four would-be terrorists who intended to carry out potentially devastating attacks on Riverdale Temple and the Riverdale Jewish Center. We are immensely thankful to you, to these courageous and talented agents, and to the entire Bureau for acting undercover to infiltrate the group and monitor its activities, thereby ensuring that the terrorists’ plans could not come to fruition.
As you well know, in a post-9/11 world, even as we live under the looming threats of al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations, we must remain vigilant so as not to overlook or discount the very real threat of homegrown terrorism. This frightening manifestation of anti-Semitism and anti-Americanism highlights the potential danger of hateful thought coupled with violent intent. The terrorists’ carefully targeted plot against Riverdale’s Jewish community serves as a harsh reminder that threats against America and against Jews are, sadly, very real, even today.
Again, we thank and commend the Bureau for your work on this case and to your continuing commitment to ensuring the safety of all Americans.
