WASHINGTON D.C., September 25, 2008 — In response to today’s enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Amendments Act of 2008, Rabbi Lynne Landsberg, Senior Advisor on Disability Issues for the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:

We applaud President Bush’s enactment of the ADA Amendments Act. Since 1990, the impact as intended by lawmakers of the landmark ADA has been thwarted by a series of misguided court rulings. Today’s new law marks vital progress toward fulfilling the promise of the original ADA and ensuring equality throughout the U.S. for individuals with disabilities.

We welcome the strong, bipartisan work of legislators who have made it clear that disability-based discrimination will not be tolerated in the workplace. We are also grateful to the efforts of the broad coalition of organizations within the faith and civil rights communities whose vigorous efforts to ensure the bill’s passage have today come to fruition.

As Rosh Hashanah approaches, we pray for a sweet new year in which the dreams of inclusion and equality will be realized.
