WASHINGTON, D.C., SEPT. 4 – Following the adoption of both the Republican and Democratic Party Platforms, Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:

As the campaign begins in earnest, we commend both the Democratic and Republican parties for stating in their adopted platforms their commitments to peace between the Israelis and Palestinians and, specifically, their support for a two-state solution to the conflict. We hope that in the raucous din of partisan politics, this bipartisan agreement of on the crucial role of a two state solution in securing America’s interests and Israel’s security will be noticed and embraced by all.

In its platform, the Republican Party endorses “the vision of two democratic states living in peace and security: Israel, with Jerusalem as its capital, and Palestine.”  The Democratic Party platform calls on the United States to “secure a lasting settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with a democratic, viable Palestinian state dedicated to living in peace and security side by side with the Jewish State of Israel.”

In order to ensure Israel’s security and future as a Jewish and democratic state, the Reform Movement has long supported a negotiated two-state solution as the only viable means of resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We know that history has shown the important role played by sustained American involvement in the peace process. We believe that continuing and deepening the recent work of the current Administration to achieve a settlement should be at the top of the agenda from the very start of the next Administration, regardless of party. These party platform planks give encouragement that this will be the case.
