Program Ideas for Congregations and Youth

Visit the RAC's Social Action Program Bank Environment Page for a list of dozens of congregation, youth group and religious school programs related to the environment. Or, check out some of these great ideas:

  • Temple Emek Shalom, Ashland, OR created a Teva (“nature”) Committee, which organizes year round creative programming.  Their kick-off event is a hike aimed at appreciating local ecology and nature and as a way of recruiting members.

  • Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel, South Orange, NJ, participates in Greening Synagogues program. The program includes a menu of activities including: energy audit and energy conservation retrofits; environmental Torah study ; an environmental health and justice tours; religious school curriculum; synagogue solar panel installation; a Jewish-environmental advocacy visit to legislators; and reduction/elimination of toxic cleaning products.

  • Elul as Environmental Mitzvah Month: Create special environmental programming throughout the entire month of Elul for all ages. Plant gardens on synagogue property to beautify the grounds and grow fruits and vegetables for use in future projects. The youth group can kick off the year volunteering at the local park. The committee can post signs around the temple with environmental messages and begin a recycling program. The month can end with a large scale event with the entire congregation cleaning up a local road, park or even the synagogue grounds.

  • Interdependence and Diversity encourages students ages 8-17 to pay more attention to how human beings interact on a daily basis with nature and the actual impact that our actions may have on our surroundings. This program can be done with students during the long break between services on Yom Kippur or any time during the Yamim Noraim.
