September 5, 2007 | Washington, DC— In response to the continuing missile attacks on the residents of the Israeli town of Sderot, Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:

Monday’s Qassam rocket attacks on Sderot, which hit an educational facility for young children, are only the latest despicable violence aimed at both terrorizing Israeli civilians and frustrating progress on the path toward peace in the region. These attacks are particularly heinous in targeting children, as the perpetrators said, “a gift for the opening of the school year.”

Beyond the physical damage and threat to lives caused by the rocket, this inflammatory statement is clearly intended to provoke a response from Israel, which has a responsibility to protect its citizens, and to further destabilize the region. We urge all those committed to peace to condemn these attacks and to denounce the efforts of these cowardly terrorist organizations and individuals. Certainly, at a bare minimum, children should be safe in their schools.
