Washington, D.C., January 28, 2013 - In response to the introduction of the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013 by Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA), Rachel Laser, Deputy Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:

"We commend Senator Dianne Feinstein (D - CA) for the introduction of the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013, and for her leadership in Congress to prevent gun violence. Since the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, Americans have made clear our resolve to secure our communities by ensuring that such weapons, which are capable of taking the lives of so many so quickly, be taken off of our streets. The expedient passage of this bill would mark the next step in ensuring that our children are safe and that another Columbine or Newtown does not again ravage our country.

We call on Congress to quickly pass the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013 and to introduce and support other gun violence prevention measures. Our Jewish tradition emphasizes the importance of saving human life and as such, gun violence prevention is of paramount importance to the Jewish community. On February 4th, this message will ring throughout the halls of Congress as we call on all Americans of faith to join an interfaith call-in day to prevent gun violence."
