Washington, D.C., January 16th, 2013 - On Wednesday, President Obama publically unveiled his plan to address gun violence. Rachel Laser, Deputy Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, attended the press conference and issued the following statement in response to the President's initiative:

We welcome President Obama's proposed plan to address the gun violence that has plagued our nation for far too long. This week marked the one-month anniversary of the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. Over the past month, even as we grieved, we have reflected as a nation on the disturbing nature of gun violence in our country and had serious discussions about what steps can be taken at national, state, local, and congregational levels to combat the epidemic of gun violence in our country.

We commend the Administration for its swift and comprehensive consideration of the complex nature of gun violence, and look forward to a full review of the Administration's proposal. We are pleased to have been included in the task force consultations led by Vice President Biden, and call on Congress to work with the White House to adopt a holistic and effective response to the scourge of gun violence affecting our nation. To ensure the continued prioritization of gun violence prevention, a diverse set of faith denominations will join the Reform Movement by participating in the Interfaith Call to Prevent Gun Violence on February 4th, where members of faith communities across the country will demand congressional action and provide a moral voice for change.
