Reform Movement Position

In March of 2001, the Commission on Social Action of Reform Judaism passed a Resolution on Election Reform (there should be a link to the resolution here). In the resolution, the Commission called for the passage of legislation that would ensure fairness with respect to the casting and counting of votes; federal financial assistance for states and localities to modernize their voting equipment; and an investigation by the Justice Department into allegations of voter disenfranchisement. The Commission also called on congregations to organize voter registration drives and engage in legislative advocacy for election reform. On behalf of the Commission, the Religious Action Center will be using the principles espoused in this resolution to lobby for the passage of comprehensive and effective election reform legislation.

The Central Conference of American Rabbis and Union for Reform Judaism will consider election reform resolutions at their upcoming conventions.
