The targeted divestment model that the Union supports follows specific guidelines to ensure that our divestment avoids unintended consequences such as hurting civilians and, specifically, the victims of genocide. These guidelines state that “divestment should therefore be targeted to those companies that:
1. Provide revenue (or arms) to the government;
2. Impart minimal benefit to the country’s underprivileged; and
3. Have expressed no significant corporate governance policy regarding the current situation in Darfur.”
The list of countries targeted for divestment is constantly reviewed and adjusted in order to reflect changing behavior. As of March 2007, there are twenty nine companies listed as suitable for divestment.
Recent lists of companies warranting divestment can be obtained by contacting the Sudan Divestment Task Force.
