House Deals Severe Blow to Family Planning Services

Pelavin: "Today's vote is an attack against Planned Parenthood and its more than 820 clinics nationwide; it is a huge blow to the millions of women and men who rely on Planned Parenthood's services -- many of whom would otherwise lack access to essential preventive health care."

WASHINGTON, D.C., February 18, 2011 -- In response to today's vote in the House of Representatives to deny all federal funding to Planned Parenthood, Mark J. Pelavin, Associate Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, released the following statement:

We are deeply troubled and disappointed by today's passage of the amendment sponsored by Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), which targeted Planned Parenthood and denied all federal funding to this crucial health service provider. Today's vote is an attack against Planned Parenthood and its more than 820 clinics nationwide; it is a huge blow to the millions of women and men who rely on Planned Parenthood's services -- many of whom would otherwise lack access to essential preventive health care. Among these services are routine physical exams, Pap smears, pelvic exams, contraception, testing for sexually transmitted diseases and infections, and screenings for breast, prostate, colon, testicular, cervical and ovarian cancer. It is worth noting that today's amendment, which was presented by its proponents as a vote on abortion, does not change the fact that under existing law, no federal dollars can be used by Planned Parenthood for abortion services.

We also reiterate our concern that the FY 11 Continuing Resolution, as currently written, would completely eliminate the Title X Family Planning program, which is the only federal grant program solely dedicated to helping organizations such as Planned Parenthood provide reproductive health care.

We urge Senators to reject these devastating cuts to family planning services and ensure all Americans have access to vital reproductive health care.
