Saperstein: “I urge the Senate leadership to expeditiously schedule a vote on Professor Liu’s confirmation.”
WASHINGTON, D.C., May 13th, 2010 — In response to the Senate Judiciary Committee’s vote to advance Goodwin Liu’s nomination to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, Rabbi David Saperstein, Director and Counsel of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:
We applaud today’s vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee to advance Professor Liu’s nomination to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. As I outlined in a letter sent last week on behalf of the Union for Reform Judaism to the Senate Judiciary Committee, Professor Liu is an outstanding nominee, with impressive professional and academic credentials. Hiskeen intellect, thoughtful approach to constitutional questions, and commitment to public service make him particularly well-suited to serve on the federal bench. His confirmation to the 9th Circuit would be invaluable to the preservation of the fundamental values that the Reform Movement supports.
I urge the Senate leadership to expeditiously schedule a vote on Professor Liu’s confirmation. He must not be subject to the same obstructionist tactics that have delayed the consideration of so many of President Obama’s Judicial and Executive Branch nominees.
