Washington, DC, December 12, 2006- In response to Iran’s hosting this week of a conference on Holocaust denial, Mark J. Pelavin, Associate Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:
The gathering of Holocaust deniers from around the world at a conference in Iran convened by a President and leaders who have repeatedly issued anti-Semitic and anti Israel statements is so absurd that one is tempted to ignore the event altogether. Yet to remain silent implies approval of views so heinous that they offend all but those lacking any shred of decency and humanity.
The extermination of 6 million Jews by the Nazi regime is, painfully, not a theory, but an historical fact. Doubters need only listen to the experiences of any survivor of Auschwitz, Treblinka, Bergen-Belsen, the Warsaw Ghetto or any other of the Nazi’s monstrous institutions, actions, and policies. Yet as the years since the Holocaust’s end increase, we are left with fewer and fewer survivors to rebut the ravings of today’s madmen. It remains the responsibility of all humanity to denounce those who deny the Holocaust, and we call on nations, organizations and individuals around the world to join in condemning Iran’s conference.
The Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism is the
Washington office of the Union for Reform Judaism, whose more than 900 congregations across North America encompass 1.5 million Reform Jews, and the Central Conference of American Rabbis, whose membership includes more than 1800 Reform rabbis.
