WASHINGTON, DC August 25, 2006 – In response to today’s dispatch of Assistant Secretary of State Jendayi Frazer to Khartoum, Sudan as part of renewed Bush Administration efforts to bring an end to the genocide raging in Darfur, Sudan, Mark Pelavin, Associate Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism issued the following statement:

Our hopes for peace and an end to the genocide are buoyed by today’s announcement. We are hopeful this news marks a rededication on the part of the the Bush Administration’s to focus on daily deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the Darfur region is most welcome. We pray and hope that Assistant Secretary of State Jendayi Frazer’s efforts will be heard loudly and clearly by the Khartoum government. Secretary Frazer is a knowledgable, capable, and creative diplomat, and we hope her work will result is a speedy deployment of a robust and effective peacekeeping mission to the region.

We are taught in Leviticus that “You shall not stand idly by the blood of your neighbor.” (Leviticus 19:16). The people in Darfur continue to suffer, the situation continues to worsen, and blood continues to be shed on Sudanese soil.

We will continue to work on behalf of the people of Darfur and urge continued pressure on all parties in the international community to bring about a permanent end to the crisis in Darfur.
