Education Funding

Federal education spending is an essential investment in our economic strength and our national security. Public education allows the United States to have one of the highest standards of living in the world by providing equality of opportunity for all children.

Our nation's schools face many challenges.

  • The number of children attending public schools is at a record level. And growing.
  • School buildings are getting old and are overcrowded. Many schools lack access to the internet.
  • There is a continuing shortage of qualified teachers.

At the same time, schools are focused on:

  • Raising academic standards
  • Improving teacher quality
  • Reducing class sizes
  • Helping the increasing numbers of children with special needs

Federal education funding provides assistance in all these areas to states and local school districts. The Federal education budget also provides many other programs critical to the future of America's children. Federal funding is well targeted, reaching those schools and those students with the greatest needs.

Funding has not kept pace with dramatic increases in enrollment or with the rising costs of educating a diverse student body with varied needs. Many critical federal programs are significantly underfunded. Everyone talks about supporting education, but reality has not matched the rhetoric. We need to make education funding a national priority.
