Reform Jewish Movement Launches “Blue Helmet Campaign” to Combat Crisis in Darfur

Saperstein: The people in Darfur continue to suffer, the situation continues to worsen, and blood continues to be shed on Sudanese soil.  The UN must step up and take action, and the “Blue Helmet campaign” calls on it to do just that.

Washington, DC, July 06, 2006 – Continuing the Reform Jewish Movement’s involvement in efforts to end the genocide in Darfur, the Religious Action Center is today launching the second part of our “30 Days for Darfur” project - the “Blue Helmet Campaign.”  The Blue Helmets are an internationally recognized sign of United Nations peacekeepers.

A statement from Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center, follows:

Over the next thirty days, we encourage people worldwide to join the “Blue Helmet Campaign” by sending postcards to the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.  The “Blue Helmet” postcards urge recipients to use their leadership positions in the UN to work toward transferring the current African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur into a United Nations force. Though the recent UN Security Council passage of a resolution seeking to persuade Sudan to cooperate with the UN as it prepares to take over peacekeeping in Darfur is an important step, more must be done.

The Blue Helmet campaign builds on the first part of our “30 Days for Darfur” effort, during which Reform Jews and other people of faith visited embassies and consulates across the nation to urge foreign leaders to become more involved in ending the genocide in Darfur.  We are taught in Leviticus that “You shall not stand idly by the blood of your neighbor.”  (Leviticus 19:16). The people in Darfur continue to suffer, the situation continues to worsen, and blood continues to be shed on Sudanese soil.  The UN must step up and take action, and the “Blue Helmet campaign” calls on it to do just that.
