Washington, March 2, 2006 - The Reform Jewish Movement is proudly joining with the Save Darfur Coalition in organizing the “Rally to Stop Genocide,” which will take place on the National Mall in Washington, DC, on April 30th.
The Washington-based Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (RAC) is coordinating the Movement’s activities around the Rally. The RAC’s Director, Rabbi David Saperstein, emphasized the importance of the Rally, saying, “As human beings and citizens of the world, we must ensure that the rally cry of ‘never again’ is no longer an empty phrase, but rather a promise we keep when we see other peoples similarly threatened with annihilation.”
The April 30th Rally will bring together thousands of political figures, leaders of the faith community, human rights activists, and Americans from all walks of life who seek to end the bloodshed in Darfur. Rabbi Michael Namath, Program Director at the RAC, is serving on the Rally’s Steering Committee. Rabbi Namath noted that “in today’s world the biblical mandate, ‘You shall not stand idly by the blood of your neighbor,’ is an urgent demand. We cannot claim we did not know the magnitude of the catastrophe in Darfur, we must raise our collective voice as loudly as possible to focus the world’s attention on the ongoing devastation in Darfur.”
The Reform Movement’s activities around the Rally include sponsoring a special Havdalah Service on Saturday evening (April 29th), holding an open meeting of its Commission on Social Action on Sunday morning (April 30th), and coordinating the advocacy visits of the entire “Save Darfur” coalition with Members of Congress on Monday morning (May 1st), after the Rally. The visits will be another way to share the message with Congress and urge increased U.S. leadership in ending the atrocities.
