Reform Jewish Leader Urges House Adoption of Resolution Restricting Aid to Palestinian Terrorist Organizations
In advance of this week’s scheduled House of Representatives’ consideration of S.Con.Res.79, expressing Congress’ sentiment that “no United States assistance should be provided directly to the Palestinian Authority if any representative political party holding a majority of parliamentary seats within the Palestinian Authority maintains a position calling for the destruction of Israel,” Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, sent a letter urging support for the resolution to House members.

Saperstein: While we support the democratic process carried out by the Palestinians, we can not ignore the fact that Hamas has for many years been at the forefront of terror attacks against Israel, designed to thwart the peace process and harm innocent Israelis.

Washington, February 14, 2006– In advance of this week’s scheduled House of Representatives’ consideration of S.Con.Res.79, expressing Congress’ sentiment that “no United States assistance should be provided directly to the Palestinian Authority if any representative political party holding a majority of parliamentary seats within the Palestinian Authority maintains a position calling for the destruction of Israel,” Rabbi David Saperstein sent the following letter urging support for the resolution to House members.

Dear Representatives:

This week, and perhaps as soon as tomorrow, the House will vote on S.Con.Res.79, expressing Congress’ sentiment that “no United States assistance should be provided directly to the Palestinian Authority if any representative political party holding a majority of parliamentary seats within the Palestinian Authority maintains a position calling for the destruction of Israel.” On behalf of the Union for Reform Judaism, whose more than 900 congregations across North America encompass 1.5 million Reform Jews, I urge you to vote for this resolution.

The results of the January elections in which Hamas won a majority of seats in the Palestinian parliament were a surprise to many in the region and around the world. While we support the democratic process carried out by the Palestinians, we can not ignore the fact that Hamas has for many years been at the forefront of terror attacks against Israel, designed to thwart the peace process and harm innocent Israelis.

Now a leading force within the Palestinian government, Hamas will have significant influence over the use of funds sent by the international community, including the United States, to the Palestinian Authority (PA). Last year, President Bush provided approximately $20 million in direct aid to the PA. Millions of dollars more were provided in other forms of aid.

S.Con.Res. 79 is an important reaffirmation of current U.S. policy that proscribes direct aid to the PA in the absence of a presidential waiver (which President Bush has issued in several of the past few years).

We look forward to working with you on this and other efforts to ensure Israel’s security. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or comments.

Sincerely,
/s/
David Saperstein
