Saperstein: An extremist with a microphone can be dangerous enough; an extremist with nuclear weapons poses a danger to the entire world.

Washington, December 8, 2005 – Following Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s denial of the Holocaust and comments that Israel should be moved to Europe, Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism issued the following statement:

We deplore the outrageous and fanatical statements made today by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Less than two months after saying Israel should be “wiped off the map,” the President has once again launched into poisonous, offensive rhetoric that is unacceptable for diplomatic political discussion when, at a news conference in Mecca, he stated, “Some European countries insist on saying that Hitler killed millions of innocent Jews in furnaces and they insist on it to the extent that if anyone proves something contrary to that they condemn that person and throw them in jail.” He also stated, “If the Europeans are honest they should give some of their provinces in Europe, like in Germany, Austria, or other countries to the Zionists and the Zionists can establish their state in Europe.”

His odious language, his repugnant distortion of history in suggesting that people can “prove” that Hitler did not kill millions of innocent Jews, and his denial of the Jewish people’s right to their historical homeland threatens stability and peace in the Middle East. For a country that aspires to membership in the community of nuclear power, these words are particularly troubling. We therefore urge members of Congress and the Bush Administration to support the Iran Freedom Support Act and other such legislation that would cut off monies that Iran could use to develop nuclear weapons. An extremist with a microphone can be dangerous enough; an extremist with nuclear weapons poses a danger to the entire world.
