WASHINGTON, October 26, 2005 - In response to the death of civil rights activist Rosa Parks, Mark J. Pelavin, Associate Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:

With all America, we mourn the loss of Rosa Parks – the “mother of the civil rights movement.” Mrs. Parks’s refusal nearly fifty years ago to give up her seat and give in to the indignities of segregation sparked a revolution. Like the biblical Nachshon, whose faith led him to be the first to step into the Sea of Reeds, paving the path to freedom for the rest of the Israelites, Rosa Parks took the first step which helped galvanize the civil rights movement.

We remember Mrs. Parks’s dedication to the achievement of equality and her passionate work to dismantle the institution of segregation. Her personal act of defiance has inspired generations and continues to demonstrate the power of a single individual to change our world for the better.

May her memory be a blessing, and may we, as a nation, continue to make progress toward the ideals to which she dedicated so much of her life.
