WASHINGTON – February 4, 2005 -- In response to New York State Supreme Court Justice Doris Ling-Cohan’s decision that a law banning same-sex marriages violates the state constitution, Mark J. Pelavin, Associate Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:

Today’s decision by State Supreme Court Justice Doris Ling-Cohan is a powerful, and welcome, example of a state court declaring that all citizens are equal under the law and thus deserve equal rights and protections, including the right to civil marriage.  We applaud this historic ruling which guarantees gay and lesbian couples in New York the same rights afforded to heterosexual couples.
